An E-Compass, or electronic compass, is a magnetic sensor-based electronic navigation device. It senses the orientation of the Earth’s magnetic field in real time and determines the present heading of the device. Unlike traditional mechanical compasses, an E-Compass can never be influenced by temperature, air pressure, or altitude; therefore stability and accuracy are improved. It comes as an integral part of smartphones, tablets, wearables, drones, and navigation systems to provide direction, positioning and attitude references to users; hence it is core to the navigation function in portable devices nowadays.

E-Compass upgrades usually implement the use of a three-axis magnetometer together with accelerometers and gyroscopes. Sophisticated algorithms then undertake data fusion so that any heading errors due to tilt or magnetic interference are compensated. This fusion algorithm guarantees more precise and stable perception of heading, hence ensuring the provision of reliable direction information even at such places where GPS signals are weak, like inside houses, tunnels, and forests. Further, it may cooperate with GPS and mapping applications to make navigation fantastic.

The more general use of the Internet of Things and smart devices has broadened the fields for application of E-Compass from daily navigation to augmented reality, smart home, robotics, and outdoor adventure equipment. In these applications, it supplies real-time position data which is essential input for the decision-making process and perception of environment by systems. The trend in futures shows that with continuous improvement in sensitivity and anti-jamming performance, e-compass will find its way as a significant component into more intelligent applications.
